Costume (2)

Costume

For my second magazine cover, it will completely juxtapose the aesthetic of my first magazine cover so that I can show how dynamic my style can be.  For the biopic of Bowie, the costume will challenge gender stereotypes in its androgynous and flamboyant nature. As for the scenery, I will use locations that are very fast-paced such as London.

Costume

For my first magazine cover, I want the costume and the mise-en-scène to bring the cover to life. The overall theme for this magazine is very hippie/bohemian. This is a very eclectic, free-spirited aesthetic which will emphasis the non-conformist nature of the young protagonist. In regards to the mise-en-scène, I will use very natural scenery (fields, lakes and trees).

Evolution of media magazines

Generic Research

Case Studies

Here, the red colour palette is used to connote urgency and importance - thus gravitating the audience's attention towards the magazine. A preferred reading could be that during the Clone Wars in the film, red was used to indicate those holding the rank of either Captain or Major- thus emphasising the importance of the magazine. The adjective 'special' evokes a sense of exclusivity which makes the audience intrigued in the product. The stark contrast of the white text on the red background puts emphasis on the fact that the magazine is about 'Star Wars' -thus appealing to the target audience. The break of the 4th wall from Samuel L. Jackson makes the relationship between the audience and the magazine more intimate and personal.

Here, the blue/cool colour palette highlights the overall aesthetic of the film 'Avatar' as James Cameron uses a lot of deep blue hues throughout the film. In addition, Empire represent Women as strong and commanding through the close-up of the character 'Ronal' in the front cover. The fact that 'Quentin Tarantino' is featured above the Masthead highlights his importance in the magazine. Tarantino is a very successful film director and the audience will be well accustomed to his fame and success in the film industry. The fact his name is in aqua blue not only contrasts the other colours in the magazine, but also emphasises the importance of his feature in the magazine. Furthermore, the phrase 'world exclusive' evokes a sense of prestige for the audience and also shows how 'Empire' magazine is international.

Here, the colour green is used by 'Empire' to highlights the overall aesthetic of the film 'Joker'. However, in literature through the ages, green has negative connotations to envy and jealousy. This could be foreshadowing the dark themes in the film.  Furthermore, the phrase 'world exclusive' evokes a sense of prestige for the audience and also shows how 'Empire' magazine is international. In addition addition, references to 'Stranger Things' and 'Spider Man' are made. This reaches a wider audience as the genres are similar to that of 'Joker'. The transposed image not only highlights his split personality, but it also creates an enigma for the audience as they will want to watch the film to understand the reference.

Statista Research Department

This graph by 'Statista' shows the monthly reach of Empire magazine in the UK from April 2019-March 2020. Here, it is evident that this magazine is incredibly popular with people 15+ (which is a very broad demographic). This graph also shows that more Men than Women engage with the magazine. In addition, majority of Empire readers are university educated, which shows how they have an affluent readership.

My target audience

Age: 16-25

Social class: Upper-middle market audience.

Interests: Coming of age/ indie/ romance / comedy and action film genres.

Here, it is evident that 'Empire' magazine use bold colours to gravitate the readers attention. Their unique colour palette makes them easily recognisable as a brand. For my 'Bowie' magazine cover I'd like to utilise  these similar elements.
